Nitric acid is commonly used to etch photoengraving zinc and magnesium plates, usually in concentrations ranging from 6% to 20% depending on the metal. For purple copper, ferric chloride at a concentration of 28-45% is usually used for etching. Most etching is done in an etching machine with an impeller that breaks the etchant into a spray and forces it to etch the plate.
